A budget shortfall is causing the Crothersville Senior Citizens Center and other senior lunch site in South Central Indiana to be open only three days a week.
According to Sue Walther, Crothersville senior site director, she received notice last week from Aging & Community Services in Columbus that effective April 1, the local senior center will be open only Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
“We are told this will be in effect until June 30 but the future is unclear,” said Walther.
Homebound meals will still be delivered but seniors will receive food frozen to be re-heated, she said.
About 50 meals are taken to homebound seniors each week; about 40 meals are served at the senior center, she said.
Walther said the cutback is not a part of the federal funding sequester but is due to state cutbacks and area funding inadequacy.
