A 30-year old Scottsburg father is in custody and his young son is safe after a stand-off with police last Tuesday, July 12.
Around 5:20 p.m., the Scottsburg City Police Department responded to 898 Allen Street on a welfare check of a child. When officers arrived, Donald J. Grose, resident of the home and father of the child would not open the door to talk to officers and would not let the officers check on the child. Officers continued to try and talk to Grose but he stopped all communication refusing to talk to officers.

When Grose stopped talking to officers, they along with deputies from the Scott County Sheriff’s Department set up a perimeter around the home and called for Indiana State Police Negotiators and the Indiana State Police Emergency Response Team.
When Indiana State Police Negotiators arrived and tried to make contact with Grose, he continued to ignore officers. After several attempts to contact the Scottsburg man, police forcibly entered the home, located and removed the child safely. Grose was also located in the home and taken into custody.
The child was treated for minor injuries at the scene he apparently received before police entered the home.
Grose was incarcerated in the Scott County Jail on the charges of criminal confinement, neglect of a dependent, and battery to a minor.
