Four north Water Tower Road residents were incarcerated in Scott County Jail on a variety of charges for what police believe is their involvement with a Nov. 9 robbery and murder in downtown Austin.
This past Friday, Scott County Prosecutor Jason Mount filed murder and a variety of other charges against James Matthew Caudill, 21, and Christopher Caudill, 31.
According to Indiana State Police Sgt. Jerry Goodin, around 3:30 p.m. on Saturday Nov. 9, John’s Coin and Jewelry Shop located at 61 West Main Street in Austin was robbed. The shop owner, John M Turner, 79, was shot and killed.
Turner was found by a family member who summoned police and EMS believing the shopkeeper had sustained a medical issue.
When a doctor and the Scott County Coroner’s Office examined Turner at the hospital, they discovered a gunshot wound to his head.
As a result of their death investigation, police obtained a search warrant for a home at 5221 North Water Tower Road northeast of Austin. Money, jewelry and other items believed taken in the robbery were found, said Goodin.
Taken into custody were:
- James Matthew Caudill, 21, of Water Tower Road, charged with murder, robbery with a deadly weapon, resisting law enforcement, obstruction of justice, carrying a handgun without a license, use of a firearm during a crime. He also faces charges in connection with an armed robbery at the Fuel Mart Truck Stop in Austin on Oct. 11. Additionally he is charged with auto theft, and unauthorized entry of motor vehicle.
- Christopher M. Caudill, 31, of Water Tower Road, charged with assisting a criminal, theft, obstruction of justice, carrying a handgun without a license, dealing in methamphetamine, possession of methamphetamine, and possession of paraphernalia.
- Ginger Lee Cox, 23, of Water Tower Road, charged with auto theft, unauthorized entry of a motor vehicle.
- Patricia A. Caudill, 50, of Water Tower Road, charged with assisting a criminal.
