September In The Morning

by Curt Kovener

September is a glorious month in the wilderness…all except for the fall pollen that periodically sends my sinuses alternatively switching from plugged up to running like the water in the creek below the dam.
While this year the month has been warmer than memory recalls, the September cooler nighttime makes for sleeping with the window open a treat. We are lulled to sleep by all the night sounds (not including the occasional snoring by all of us). Crickets, tree frogs, the occasional bullfrog, whippoorwill and, on rare occasions barred, barn, and the eerie sounding screech owls join the nocturnal chorus.
Then in the morning, after I and the sun get up for the day, songbirds flitter and twitter about (not the social media kind) looking for a breakfast of seeds and insects.
As I sit on the front porch overlooking thee lake and sip my morning coffee, the slowly awakening sky reflects hues of pink and blue on fluffy clouds that this particular morning look like a fresh plowed field of marshmallow.
The phoebes, Carolina wrens, chickadees and nuthatches flutter from the tree to the ground dining on what’s available. As the sun gets higher, they join in another symphony of praise for making it to another day.
A soft, hollow tappity-tappity-tap comes from a nearby sassafras tree as a downy woodpecker sends out a Morse code message that he, too, is seeking a morning meal of insects these hidden under the bark of the dead sassafras limb.
Too much work, not enough energy and the summer heat resulted in much of the wilderness pasture not getting mowed this season. That bit of lazy is now paying off as flocks of wild turkeys meander about the field and dam dining on the ripening grass & weed seeds. If I sit very still they pay me no mind. But if so much as I scratch my itchy nose, it puts them on alert and the slowly disappear back into the forest.
Some of the leaves of the wilderness have already fallen while others are beginning to change their masks of green to their true hues of red, yellow, and orange. When they fall they will be mulched and vacuumed into a pile to compost into future seasons’ flower and vegetable plantings.
The coming autumn brings seasonal work of more than usual mowing and weed trimming, maintenance on the tractor and mowers, and cleaning out the always cluttered barn and basement.
But for now I fetch another cup of coffee and return to the front porch vista. Work can wait while I relish the palate of nature in September.

CPD Arrests Local Woman On Drug, Obstruction Charges

Tried To Swallow Meth & Heroin

A Crothersville woman was booked into Jackson County Jail Friday, Sept. 6, on a variety of drug charges after she attempted to swallow a quantity of methamphetamine and heroin in front of a police officer.
Kayla Suzann Barger, 23, of East Walnut Street faces charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of heroin, resisting law enforcement and obstruction of justice
Crothersville Chief of Police Matthew Browning said that earlier he observed a dark colored SUV parked in a parking lot on Meyers Street on the town’s west side and that a female was sitting in the drivers seat.
“The area this vehicle was parked in has had several burglary and thefts and the owner of the property requested that the police department do patrols in the area and to check on people that were on the property,” said Browning.
Chief Browning explained to the driver that the property owner did not want anyone hanging around in the parking lot. The driver said that she was not aware and that she would “leave as soon as Kayla came out of a nearby residence.”
After Browning got back into his vehicle he said he saw Barger come out of the residence and start to walk toward the SUV. Browning reported he got out of his police vehicle to speak with Barger. Browning said that when Barger saw him, she began walking faster to the SUV, got in the passenger side and slammed the door shut.
Browning said she refused to roll down the window and he saw her put a large white plastic covered object into her mouth.
Browning said he opened the door and asked Barger to step out of the vehicle but she kept trying to close the door. The Chief said he grabbed her right arm and ordered her out of the vehicle, but she would not comply. He physically removed her from the vehicle all the while the woman kept trying to pull away, Browning said.
“She would try to talk but she could not due to what she had put in her mouth,” Browning said.
He instructed at her to spit out whatever she was trying to swallow, and she would not, he reported. “The driver of the vehicle was yelling at her as well telling her to spit it out,” said the officer.
Browning said he was able to get control of Barger and place her in handcuffs. He then leaned her over and kept telling her to spit out whatever was in her mouth which she eventually did.
“She tried to swallow 7 grams of meth and small baggie of heroin,” Browning reported.
The officer asked her if she needed medical attention and she screamed, “That was all I had,” Browning said.
The driver of the SUV was not charged in the incident.
Barger was booked-in to Jackson County Jail at 6:11 p.m.. She remains in custody on a $20,005 bond.

Scott Deputies Make Arrests On Drugs, Weapons, Theft Charges

On Saturday, Sept. 7, Scott County Deputy John Hartman made a traffic stop in Austin. The driver of the vehicle, Berry Wicker, 40, of Lexington, gave the officer an Indiana ID card and stated he did not have a driver’s license. Additionally, Wicker could not produce a valid registration for the vehicle either and Wicker admitted to having drug paraphernalia in the vehicle.
A search of Wicker’s vehicle, with the assistance of Deputy Darin Marshall, produced paraphernalia and a white crystal like substance that field tested positive for methamphetamine.
Wicker was arrested for possession of methamphetamine, possession of paraphernalia, and maintaining a common nuisance.
Around 1 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 8, Deputy Kenton Makowsky made a traffic stop on Marshfield Road and spoke with the driver, Jeremy McIntosh, 41, of New Albany. The Deputy learned from Scott dispatch that McIntosh had a Scott County Court warrant for his arrest. Dep. Makowsky found that McIntosh had marijuana and drug paraphernalia on him. McIntosh was arrested for possession of paraphernalia, possession marijuana, and the Scott County warrant for failure to appear.
Around noon on Sunday, Sept. 8, Deputy John Hartman as well as detectives with the Scott County Sheriff’s Office responded to a welfare check to a residence in Blocher. While there Dep. Hartman made a traffic stop near the residence and spoke with the driver, Nathan Cole, 41, of Lexington.
Cole admitted to having marijuana in his vehicle and he consented to a search of his vehicle. Detectives obtained a search warrant for Cole’s residence. As a result of the search of his residence, Cole was arrested for possession marijuana, possession of a controlled substance, possession of paraphernalia, possession of a legend drug, possession of syringe, maintaining a common nuisance, and possession of methamphetamine.
Around midnight on Sunday, Sept. 8, Deputy Johnney Coomer received a citizen tip that Michael Doyle, 32, of Lexington, was near Pine Street, driving a silver Chevrolet pickup truck.
Doyle had arrest warrants out of Clark County and United States Marshals were attempting to locate him, according to Scott County Sheriff Jerry Goodin. Deputy Coomer located the pickup truck and made a traffic stop.
As the deputy approached the vehicle he observed Michael Doyle exit the driver side of the vehicle and reached into the tire well of the vehicle. The officer took Doyle into custody. Then discovered a firearm located in the tire well of the vehicle where Doyle was reaching.
Doyle was arrested for two active warrants, possession of a handgun without a license, and possession of a firearm by felon.
On Tuesday, Sept. 10, Deputies James Shelton, Johnney Coomer and Cory Hulsizer responded a residence on Slate Ford Road in the southern part of the county on a report of a fight involving two men. It was reported to police that one of the men had a gun.
When deputies arrived they attempted to break up the fight when one of the men, Christopher Davis, 33, of Lexington began resisting and fighting with them.
After a short scuffle Davis was subdued by officers and transported to University of Louisville Hospital for treatment from injuries sustained from the fight with Patrick Riley of Charlestown. Officers determined that Riley had an outstanding warrant from Clark County. After being treated at the Scott Memorial Hospital he was released to the Clark County Sheriff’s Office.
The next day Scott County Prosecutor Chris Owens filed charges against Davis for unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, pointing a loaded firearm, battery with a deadly weapon and resisting law enforcement.
Officers returned to the Slate Ford Road residence and placed Davis under arrest. He was incarcerated in Scott County Jail without incident.
On Wednesday, Sept. 11, Deputies John Smith and Nate Love responded to a residence Sunny Side Road in in Johnson Township is northeast Scott County on a report of a burglary in progress. When they arrived officers placed Bradley Helton, 22, of Deputy, under arrest for burglary, theft and criminal trespass.
All of those arrested, except Patrick Riley, were incarcerated in Scott County Jail.

If the real property is sold in the tax sale, the amount required to redeem such property will be 110% of the minimum bid for which the tract or real property was offered at the time of sale, if redeemed not more than six (6) months after the date of sale, or 115% of the minimum bid for which the tract or real property was offered at the time of sale, if redeemed more than six (6) months after the date of sale, plus the amount by which the purchase price exceeds the minimum bid on the real property plus five percent (5%) per annum interest on the amount by which the purchase price exceeds the minimum bid on the property. All taxes and special assessments upon the property paid by the purchaser subsequent to the sale, plus five percent (5%) per annum interest on those taxes and special assessments, will also be required to be paid to redeem such property.
In addition, IC 6-1.1-25-2 (e) states the total amount required for redemption may include the following costs incurred and paid by the purchaser or the purchaser’s assignee or the county before redemption: (1) The attorney’s fees and cost of giving notice under IC 6-1.1-25-4.5; (2) The costs of title search or examining and update the abstract of title for the tract or item of real property. The period of redemption shall expire on Thursday, October 29, 2020 for certificates sold in the tax sale. For certificates struck to the county, the period of redemption may expire Wednesday, February 26, 2020.
If the tract or item of real property is sold for an amount more than the minimum bid and the property is not redeemed, the owner of record of the property who is divested of ownership at the time the tax deed is issued may have a right to the tax sale surplus.
The Auditor and Treasurer specifically reserve the right to withhold from the sale any parcel which has been listed in error, or which otherwise becomes ineligible for sale either prior to 10/29/2019 or during the duration of the sale.
This notice of real property tax sale, and the tax sale itself are undertaken and will be conducted pursuant to the requirements of the laws of the State of Indiana which regulate the sale of land for delinquent taxes, pursuant to I.C. 6-1.1-24-1 et seq.
The County does not warrant the accuracy of the street address or common description of the property, and a misstatement in the key number or street address does not invalidate an otherwise valid sale.
Minimum bid amounts are prescribed by law and are subject to change prior to the auction date.
Pursuant to IC 6-1.1-24-3(e), property descriptions may be omitted for properties appearing on the certified list in consecutive years. A complete property list may be obtained at www.sriservices.com or in an alternative form upon request.
