Fireworks In Austin This Friday Night

The annual Austin Fireworks display will be this Friday night, June 29, on the grounds of Austin High School/Middle School. The event is traditionally held the Friday before July 4th, giving families and friends a chance to celebrate Independence Day a little early, according to Melissa Turner, spokesperson for Austin Mayor Dillo Bush.
Food booths will be set up by the Austin Volunteer Fire Department, Austin Lions Club, and the Psi Iota Xi Sorority. All booths will open by 6 p.m. on the east side of the school building. Fireworks will begin at dark.
Free entertainment will fill the hours prior to the fireworks. The music lineup is planned by Ray Bowling and will include bands Redemptions Cross, Hewitt & Fink, Lonesome Crow Acoustic Show, On the House, and The Fabulous Hickbilly’s.
“Those planning to attend are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy the fireworks comfortably,” said Turner.
Parking will be available in front of the school building and on the south side of the gym located at the elementary schools. Some parking will be available on the east side of the complex.

Hoosier Headlight Law Changing Sunday

A new Indiana state law goes into effect July 1, clarifying an existing law regarding headlight colors as well as eliminating loopholes that were used to get around the old law.
Senate Bill 266 will soon become Public Law 164. It was signed by Gov. Eric Holcomb March 21 and deals with regulations related to motor vehicle safety– including headlight, brake light, and turn signal colors.
Beginning July 1, Hoosier drivers will only be permitted to display white or amber headlights. All other headlight shades will be illegal.
“That head lamps on motor vehicles, motorcycles and motor driven cycles may display only white or amber light. Requires that motor vehicles except for motorcycles, motor vehicles manufactured before January 1, 1956 and motor driven cycles must be equipped with two stoplights,” the law states.
The law further specifies brake lights on the rear of a vehicle must be red, and signal lights at the rear of the vehicle must display only red or amber lights, including any shade of color between red and amber.
A car is in compliance with the new law if someone standing in front of it with the lights on can see only white or amber colored lights.
Indiana drivers should not count on a grace period after the law goes into effect, though each officer will be allowed to make their own determination in individual situations.
The new law also requires license plates to be displayed in an upright, horizontal position with the registration expiration year visible in the upper right corner. Renewal stickers must be securely attacked to the upper right corner of the license plate and must cover the previous year’s sticker.
License plate lights must be white as well.

This Summer’s Very Report Is Berry Good

by Curt Kovener

With the multitude of changes that have been and continue to go on with the newspaper, I had been derelict of duty with mowing the area of the wilderness to keep too much from becoming more wilderness.
Mowing is therapy for me. I can think, solve problems, foresee additional ones, and come up with possible alternative solutions.
And when the grass is tall I have to mow slower which gives me time to view the landscape.
I am pleased to report an excellent black raspberry crop along the mowed edges. Unlike previous years when they would ripen slowly, this summer entire canes are showing shiny ripe fruit.
A move to the lower walking trail shows a good potential for the blackberry crop. There has been adequate rainfall (sometimes too much, too quick) in the wilderness so I expect the now green blackberries to turn red then fill out to their juicy ripest.
Then it will be knee-high muck boots, bug spray and my homemade berry bucket. In its former life it was a coffee can and a length of spare 12-2 copper wire serves as a bail. A small spring loaded clamp affixes the bucket to my belt so I can use a two-handed pickling style.
While it is hotter, I wear an old long-sleeve shirt so the briars claw the fabric of the shirt and not my skin.
The first bucket of blackberries goes to Becky’s cobbler. And the first cobbler out of the oven gets initiated with vanilla ice cream.
Future buckets of blackberries get washed and placed in plastic bags in the freezer for winter cobblers and memories of summer.
