ISTEP+ Scores Vary Slightly

Crothersville and Brownstown continued to lead county schools in academic success for the second straight year according to statistics gleaned from this Spring’s ISTEP+ (Indiana Statewide Testing for Education Progress Plus) testing of students which was released last week by the Indiana Department of Education.

Three of the four Jackson County school systems showed slight declines in the percentage of students passing both the math and language sections of the test as compared with last year’s scores.

Crothersville Community Schools fell just slightly, going from a 70.8 percent pass rate in 2011 to 69.1 percent this year.

Brownstown Central Community Schools had a 73.2 pass rate while scoring 73.6% in 2011

Seymour Community Schools dropped around a percent from 66.3% to 65.2%.

Medora suffered the biggest loss, going from a 64.1 percent pass rate in 2011 to a 53.8 in 2012.

The state average for passing both math and language in 2012 is 71 percent.

The percentage of statewide students passing the math portion in the state reached 81 per cent, a 2 percent increase over last year.

Hoosier students recorded a pass rate of 79 percent on the English/language arts portion, a 71 per cent on the science section and a 69 on the social studies segment.

Crothersville and Seymour saw some success on the math portion, increasing their scores slightly.

Two other area schools also showed declines in passing percentage from last year to this.

Jennings County Schools went from 70.2 percent passing in 2011 to 69.7.

Scott County School District 1 (Austin) went from 68.4% in 2011 to 62.5% in 2012.

Students at Scott County School District 2 (Scottsburg) showed a narrow increase going from 64.9% in 2011 to 65.7 percent this year.

Crothersville Town Players To Host Community Ice Cream Social This Saturday

A 1950′s themed Ice Cream Social will be hosted this Saturday, July 21, by the Crothersville Town Players at Hamacher Hall from 6-8 p.m.

Admission is free with ice cream sundaes, home baked cookies, lemonade and iced tea being served.

“The All Around Sound Guy” DJ Matt White, will provide for the evening.

“The purpose for the free event is to encourage interest in the exploration and preservation of Crothersville history,” said CTP President Brenda Holzworth. “Our mission includes promoting interest in the cultural and performing arts. We welcome the community to an evening of family-friendly fun.”

The Crothersville Historical and Cultural Arts Association is a non-profit group with 501c3 status. Fundraisers and donations are the only means to maintain the programs available to those in the Crothersville area.

“Come join us and take a journey back to your teen years of the 50s and 60s,” said event decorator, Brenda Moody-Bradley.

Organizers include group President Brenda Holzworth, Vice-President Bill Nagle, Secretary Linda Seals, and Treasurer Eunice Lacey.

Memberships are available for $12 annual, or $6 for students. Monetary donations and volunteers are welcomed. For more information about The Crothersville Town Players, either stop in at Aunt Samantha’s or call Brenda Holzworth at 793-2760.

Local Man Charged In Connection With Hardy Lake Beach Theft

A Crothersville and Little York men were charged by Indiana State Police with breaking into a vehicle at the Hardy Lake Beach and stealing a wallet last Tuesday, July 10.

According to ISP Sgt. Jerry Goodin, troopers were called to the Hardy Lake Beach area where a theft had been reported. When troopers arrived the victims told police someone had entered their unlocked car and stole a wallet and other personal items. Witnesses in the area were able to describe an automobile and two alleged thieves.

Police were able to match the description of the alleged thieves as James Stephan Tharp, 22, of Crothersville and Eric L. Couch, 23, from Austin.

State Police located the pair at Eric Couch’s residence on York Road in Austin around 10 p.m. July 10. After speaking with both men troopers placed them both under arrest for theft. Police were able to recover most of the stolen property, Goodin said.

Tharp and Couch were incarcerated at the Scott County Jail.

The Irony Of The Fires

by Curt Kovener

In the Middle Ages in Great Britain, the church held significant sway over government leaders and the general populace. Church leaders liked dictating to others how they should live as it kept the church in a position of power. The religious intolerance resulted in one of the greatest human tragedies in history.

The church fathers used fear and intimidation to force the populace to behave the way they deemed appropriate and punish those who behaved inappropriate (and thus the leaders were enabled to remain in a position of authority).

One of the church’s methods of intimidation was carried out on females. Women with mental or emotional issues by today’s medical standards were often labeled as witches by the church. The church fathers of the day came up with a variety of ways of ‘proving’, the poor soul was a practitioner of the black arts.

The simple accusation of being a witch resulted in a Catch-22 situation.

A woman charged with being a witch might have a large heavy stone placed on her. If she was crushed to death by the stone it was determined that she was not a witch and therefore, was allowed to enter into heaven. If she survived the pressing, church leaders said it proved the devil intervened to save her and she must be a witch.

Those who survived the pressing were burned at the stake to rid the community of non-Christian pestilence. Church and community leaders encouraged the witnesses of these executions to throw cats onto the fire as the felines-we today consider as pets-were then thought to be forms of demons that consorted with witches.

As a result of the destruction of thousands of cats, rats and mice proliferated. And the rodents had fleas, many of which carried the bacteria Yersinia pestis. When the rodents unchecked by the lack of cat population invaded the kitchens and homes of citizens, the resulting bubonic plague ravaged England.

It was fear mongoring by church leaders on its ignorant citizens that resulted in one of the greatest plaques which killed tens of thousands.

In 1666 a great fire in London destroyed 80 percent of the city but also ended the outbreak of bubonic plague.

Ironic that that which was started by fire, ended with fire.
